Associate of Science Transfer

About the Program

This Major Transfer Map Curriculum Articulation Policy (MTM CAP) outlines specific course requirements for students at any participating Oregon community college who plan to transfer to a participating four-year public university and earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology. A completed Core Transfer Map will transfer to any of the 7 Oregon Public Universities (OPU). A complete MTM-CAP will give students all guarantees listed in this MTM CAP at the participating OPUs listed in this agreement. The MTM CAP is intended for students who know they want to transfer and earn a Bachelor of  Science in Biology, but who are unsure of their intended transfer destination. Students should work with an advisor to ensure they fulfill the requirements of this major transfer map. Students who are certain of both their major and their intended transfer destination should consult an advisor for information on an existing specific articulation agreement or degree map that will prescribe their course requirements.

If students complete a Major Transfer Map and meet public university admissions requirements, they are guaranteed transfer to a participating Oregon four-year public university with junior standing, and their coursework will count toward a bachelor’s degree in that specific major. On this page, educators and partners can find the current list of approved MTMs, as well as information guiding the ongoing implementation of MTMs in Oregon.

For additional information, refer to the Higher Education Coordinating Commission Transfer Map website.

Program Learning Outcomes

The curriculum in RCC courses is derived from a set of identified learning outcomes that are relevant to the discipline. Upon completion of the AST in Biology, students will be able to:

Apply the process of science to biological phenomena.

Use quantitative reasoning to present evidence-based arguments.

Communicate an emerging understanding of the impact of scientific discovery and research on society.

Entry Requirements

Students are required to complete the Placement Process to determine skill level and readiness in math, reading, and writing. As part of their training program, students must begin with the courses within their skill level as determined through the Placement Process.

Advanced Standing

Coursework from accredited colleges and universities will be accepted in accordance with college policies and the Science Department Chair’s approval. In order to ensure coursework is current, program courses over 10 years old must be reviewed and approved by the appropriate department chair before being accepted toward course requirements.

Graduation Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 90 term credits of lower division collegiate courses with a minimum grade of “C-” or better. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at the time the Biology Associate of Science Transfer is awarded. Students should also refer to the Higher Education Coordinating Commission Transfer Map website for additional course GPA requirements that may be applicable at their transfer institution.

Additional Courses to Reach 90 Credits

See an advisor for recommended courses.
At this point [above = 70-79 credits], it is recommended students pursue these options:

 1. Take courses that will apply to the major at the Oregon public university of their choice (work with an advisor):

  • Students considering a pre-professional degree should take organic chemistry, if possible, prior to transferring. Talk with an advisor about appropriate options.
  • The MTM contains the minimum math required in the Biology major; additional math may be required by the transfer university and should be taken before transferring, if possible. See post-transfer crosswalk for additional math requirements.

 2. Take courses that will apply to general education or the minor of choice, that will transfer to the Oregon public university of  their choice (work with an advisor).

 3. Take electives to reach 90 credits, that will transfer to the Oregon public university of their choice (work with an advisor).
