PH 211 - General Physics - Calculus I 4 Credit(s)
Prerequisite(s):
WR 115 or designated placement
WR 115Q as required, and
MTH 112Z or higher-level math course, or designated placement.
Corequisite(s):
MTH 251Z , PH 211L
Course Description: This is the first term of a three-term calculus-based physics course. Conservation laws and Newtonian mechanics are covered. This includes but is not limited to forces and motion, forms of energy (including kinetic potential and various types of internal energy such as rotational, thermal and latent), conservation of momentum, conservation of angular momentum, conservation of energy, Newton’s laws, kinematics, free-body diagrams, net force equations, torque and orbital mechanics. Students must enroll in lecture and laboratory. Both sections are required and to be taken concurrently.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- CLO#1: Use vectors, algebra, calculus, dimensional analysis, and logical reasoning to solve general physics problems. (ILO: Quantitative Literacy and Reasoning)
- CLO#2: Make sensible assumptions and simplifications to solve physics problems with incomplete information.
- CLO#3: Apply conservation laws in physics (momentum, angular momentum, energy) using calculus where appropriate.
- CLO#4: Apply Newton’s laws (inertia, force, mass, acceleration, action, reaction) using calculus where appropriate.
- CLO#5: Select the equations (using calculus where needed) appropriate to the constraints of a given physics problem.
ACTI Code and Course Type 100 Lower Division Collegiate
Length of Course: A required state minimum of (40) and a standard RCC delivery of (44) lecture hours per term, not to exceed (48) hours per term.
