PE 185DSL - Dance: Salsa and Latin

Prerequisite(s): Ability to stand and move in close contact with another person. 

Course Description: Salsa and Latin dance is an introductory social dance course that covers basic steps, patterns, and technique for several popular Latin rhythms. An emphasis on lead and follow technique will allow students to execute improvised dance to music. By the end of the term, students will have a fundamental working knowledge of the dances presented in class, with some ability both to lead and follow as demonstrated in a final exam. The dances covered include: Salsa, Cumbia, Bachata, and Merengue.

Course is repeatable. 

Course Level: Lower Division Collegiate

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1: Participate in the class, and develop the mastery of the basic steps of dances covered.
  • CLO#2: Practice how to monitor, modify, and correct the dance moves and develop appropriate terminology. (ILO: Critical Thinking)
  • CLO#3: Develop musicality, mood and rhythm using improvisational dance skills to perform at least four elements in each dance.
  • CLO#4: Demonstrate a step that has been taught in the class twice during the term.
