MTH 110 - Foundations for Precalculus

4 Credit(s)

Corequisite(s): WR 115  or higher-level writing course

WR 115Q  as required

Course Description: A course designed exclusively for students preparing for precalculus. This course is intended for students with prior exposure to foundational algebraic topics. This course is a study of linear, quadratic, polynomial, radical, and exponential functions and their uses. Primary topics are basic properties of functions, analysis and graphing, algebraic simplification, and equation solving. Applications, modeling using data, and problem solving are embedded throughout the course. The use of graphing technology is an integral part of the class. Successful completion prepares the student for MTH 111Z  and MTH 211 . This course may not satisfy math transfer credit. Course is graded A through F.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1: Algebraically, numerically, and graphically analyze functions, exploring properties of functions both with and without technology.
  • CLO#2: Identify and discuss key properties of linear, quadratic, higher degree polynomials, radicals, and exponential functions.
  • CLO#3: Simplify linear, quadratic, higher degree polynomials, radicals, and exponential expressions. (ILO: Quantitative Literacy and Reasoning)
  • CLO#4: Solve linear, quadratic, and radical equations.
  • CLO#5: Solve applied problems, including regression equations, while identifying and discussing the reasonableness and implications of mathematical methods, solutions, and approximations in context.

Typical Required and Recommended Equipment and Materials: Graphing calculator (TI-83, TI-83 Plus, or TI-84 Plus are recommended), graph paper, pencil, paper, and notebook.
