MT 122L - Special Populations Lab 1 Credit(s)
Corequisite(s): MT 122
Course Description: In this lab, students will learn and practice techniques to effectively work with diverse populations, including individuals who have experienced traumatic events, the elderly, trauma-informed clients, those who are chronically ill, terminally ill, oncology patients, and individuals with special needs.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- CLO#1: Perform client intake procedures for clients from special populations (e.g., trauma-impacted, chronically or terminally ill, and elderly clients) to identify individual considerations.
- CLO#2: Demonstrate safe and appropriate sanitation, draping methods, and personal hygiene in the performance of massage and bodywork when working with special populations.
- CLO#3: Determine appropriate treatment based on intake, consultation and special considerations, assess client’s reactions during treatment and adjust treatment accordingly. Assess post treatment reactions and give appropriate post treatment instructions. (ILO: Communication)
- CLO#4: State considerations, complications, and massage therapy contraindications for safely applying techniques with modifications for special populations.
Typical Required and Recommended Equipment and Materials: Students should wear comfortable clothing and bring two sheets, a pillowcase, a clean-up towel, an oil holster, socks/slippers, and a swimsuit or clean undergarments to each class.

Length of Course: A required state minimum of (20) and a standard RCC delivery of (22) lecture/lab hours per term, not to exceed (24) hours per term.
