WR 117  or WR 115  or higher-level writing course, or designated placement,

WR 115Q  as required, and acceptance into the Massage Therapy program.

Course Description: Provides instruction in the history, techniques, treatment procedures, structure of the body parts, and practical application of Swedish massage for each area. Students will learn about massage equipment, sanitation, professional hygiene, and client communication including client history, indications, and contraindications for massage. Objectives and benefits of massage will also be covered.

Course Learning Outcomes:

• CLO#1: Identify various massage techniques (Swedish, Myofascial, Deep Tissue, among others) while considering individual treatment goals and client responses.
• CLO#2: Analyze research findings regarding pain types, endangerment sites, contraindications, and historical influences in massage therapy.
• CLO#3: Use effective listening and communication skills to build rapport and assess client goals and requests. (ILO: Communication)
• CLO#4: Exhibit ethical decision-making and legal compliance in massage therapy practice, including managing transference and countertransference.
• CLO#5: Implement safe and effective body mechanics when using massage tables to accommodate client size and prevent therapist injury
• CLO#6: Maintain hygiene and infection control standards for personal care, the treatment room, and massage equipment.
