MET 160 - Introduction to Metallurgy

MTH 20  or designated placement.

Recommended Prerequisite(s):  

MFG 101  

Course Description: Studies basic metallurgy as it relates to manufacturing processes. The course introduces the identification of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in the manufacturing industry. This course also covers mechanical and physical properties, powder metallurgy, heat treatment, alloying, crystalline structures, effects of machining, and testing processes.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1: Identify basic components and manufacturing processes of carbon (ferrous) materials.
  • CLO#2: Demonstrate safe and proper shop practices.
  • CLO#3: Validate the usefulness of the tempering process.
  • CLO#4: Differentiate between basic metallurgical compositions of steels and alloys.
  • CLO#5: Identify proper application based on material composition. (ILO: Critical Thinking)
