Course Description: Provides instruction in the history, techniques, treatment procedures, structure of the body parts, and practical application of Swedish massage for each area. Students will learn about massage equipment, sanitation, professional hygiene, and client communication including client history, indications, and contraindications for massage. Objectives and benefits of massage will also be covered.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- CLO#1: Demonstrate knowledge of techniques, goals, and reactions of Swedish massage.
- CLO#2: Demonstrate knowledge of research literacy, pain types, endangerment sites, contraindications and the history of massage.
- CLO#3: Demonstrate knowledge of effective listening and communication skills to establish a rapport and review client’s goals and requests. (ILO: Communication)
- CLO#4: Demonstrate knowledge of professional appearance, business communications, conduct and work ethic, including transference and countertransference, legal requirements and ethical decision making.
- CLO#5: Demonstrate knowledge of safe, effective body mechanics in the use of massage tables based on the size and shape of the client to prevent injury of the therapist while providing treatment.
- CLO#6: Demonstrate knowledge of good hygiene and standard sanitary precautions and practices of infection control for individuals, the massage treatment room environment and equipment.
Typical Required and Recommended Equipment and Materials: Students should wear comfortable clothing and bring two sheets, a pillowcase, a clean-up towel, an oil holster, socks/slippers, and a swimsuit or clean undergarments to each class.
