FR 103 - First Year French III

Prerequisite(s):  

WR 115  or designated placement, or BT 113  or BT 114 , and FR 102  

WR 115Q  as required.

Course Description: Introduces basic skills in French in speaking, writing, reading, and aural comprehension to the Intermediate Low level. Special attention is given to developing cultural awareness. The sequence enables students to reach at least Novice High proficiency as defined by the guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). FR 101  / FR 102  / FR103 must be taken in sequence. Courses are not suitable for heritage speakers.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1: Speak clearly about basic life skills topics with those accustomed to dealing with non-native speakers.
  • CLO#2: Demonstrate culturally appropriate behavior.
  • CLO#3: Use learned vocabulary words, phrases, and expressions to describe and express important ideas on a range of topics, both orally and in writing. (ILO: Communication)
  • CLO#4: Comprehend and explain important ideas and basic details from simple authentic audio and video sources.
  • CLO#5: Explain important ideas and some details in face-to-face interactions when speech is limited and basic.

 
Typical Course Content:
By the end of the term, the student will be able to read, write, comprehend aurally, and speak about the following:

●    past tense (preterit)

●    describe how long ago something took place

●    family relationships in more depth than in FR102     

●    use direct object pronouns for people and inanimate objects

●    food, including cultural information on meal times, special plates from Francophone countries, and how to read a recipe

●    negation   

●    childhood activities, games, and toys

●    past intentions

●    special grammatical construction used for accidents and unplanned occurrences

●    diminutive suffixes and their cultural implications

●    geography

●    weather and climate in more detail than in FR102

●    means of transportation

●    car parts and maintenance

●    road signs common in Francophone countries

●    simple material involving the environment and ecology

●    the present perfect tense

●    suffix used in formation of adverbs

●    expressing likes and dislikes in more depth than in FR101 and FR102

●    instructions and cultural information about subways and public transportation

●    be able to check in and out of hotels

●    terminology dealing with air travel (domestic and international)

●    give and respond to travel related commands

●   describe what you want others to do, and culturally appropriate ways of giving commands

In addition to the above, the student will also be familiar with the content of FR101 and FR102.
