Course Description: Provides a survey of various aspects of civilization in regions around the world. In addition to discussion of western civilizations originating from the Near East and Europe, this course includes the civilizations of India, Africa, East Asia (China/Japan) Russia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Included in the reading and discussion are historical, cultural, religious, social, economic, and political developments in the various civilizations. Fulfills cultural literacy requirement within the Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1: Explain the similarities among civilizations through identifying conditions which allow civilizations to develop and discuss why civilizations change or collapse.
  • CLO#2: Explain differences in culture, attitude, and religion among civilizations.
  • CLO#3: Analyze governmental and class structures, revolutions and religious movements.
  • CLO#4: Give examples of historical motives and actions affecting the present and identify opportunities for the future.
  • CLO#5: Identify the major world religions and political theories and their places in the growth of civilizations, politics, and culture in various locations. (ILO: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Global Consciousness)
