Course Description: The intent of this study is to gain skills in appreciating, understanding, and evaluating the beauty and meaning in art and life in the context of culture, and evolving needs and belief systems. For art majors, a necessary foundation is laid for advanced study in studio art and art history. Students study the history of art in the context of the cultures producing them, by studying selected works of painting, sculpture, architecture, and other fine arts, from Renaissance to Baroque periods. Students study the development of art in the Western tradition with reference to major periods and styles of art from the non-Western world, including art from Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific Islands. Fulfills cultural literacy requirement within the Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree (AAOT).

Course Learning Outcomes:

• CLO#1: Identify major artistic periods and stylistic trends from the European Renaissance to Baroque, as well as early India, Southeast Asia, China, Korea, Japan, the Americas, and Early Africa.
• CLO#2: Identify significant cultural needs and beliefs that affect the qualities and visual symbolic language of art in a given time period. (ILO: Communication)
• CLO#3: Identify various art processes and techniques used by artists to express ideas, emotions, cultural values and activities, through two- and three-dimensional art forms.
• CLO#4: Analyze historical and cultural issues in a wide variety of works of art.
