PE 185FS - Flexibility and Manual Stretching

Course Description: A combination of self-massage, manual stretching, and breathing techniques utilizing foam rollers, tennis/therapy balls, and stretching straps. This class covers basic kinesiology and common areas of muscle tensions, and how to manually stretch these in order to prevent muscle injuries in athletes and anyone who moves regularly. The class starts with safety of stretching/foam rolling and flexibility measurement, leading into foam rolling the larger muscle groups of the upper body. Then a breakdown of targeting larger muscle groups in the lower body with the foam roller for manual stretching and stretch Straps for learning deeper and more effective stretching techniques. The final part of the course will focus on manual stretch techniques of smaller muscle groups utilizing tennis/therapy balls and common areas of tension that can be released to help prevent athletic injuries. Course is repeatable.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  • CLO#1: Apply principles of flexibility while stretching to promote toning and prevent injury.
  • CLO#2: Demonstrate improvement in flexibility, tone, and range of motion for targeted body areas. (ILO: Critical Thinking)
  • CLO#3: Demonstrate how to properly stretch common areas of tension and large muscle groups of the body.
  • CLO#4: Present information to the class on the muscles in one area of the body, including techniques to stretch that area.
