DH 230 - Community Dental Health I 3 Credit(s)
Prerequisite(s):
Successful completion of all four previous terms of the Dental Hygiene program.
Course Description: Introduces students to the principles and practices of dental public health. The emphasis is placed on the role of the dental hygienist as an innovator of, and an educator in community health programs. During this course, the students will plan a community oral health education program that is implemented and evaluated during Community Dental Health II. Cultural differences, socioeconomic factors and barriers to health care are discussed in relation to developing preventive programs. In addition, students will have an opportunity to learn about federal and state public health programs and current public health issues. Community oral health programs for vulnerable populations such as indigent, geriatric, and special-needs patients are included.

- CLO#1 Identify and describe community dental health activities related to prevention and control of oral conditions and promote health. (ILO: Communication)
- CLO#2 Develop strategies to effect changes in need, demand, and utilization of dental services.
- CLO#3 Design and organize the planning methods and materials for the assessed dental needs of a community.
- CLO#4 Identify and construct the methods for implementing a successful plan to meet the assessed dental needs of a community.
- CLO#5 Develop a plan for a community-based project, including a complete implantation plan.
