DA 205 - Adv Assisting - Expanded Functions 4 Credit(s)
Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of the first term of a Dental program.
Course Description: This board prep course prepares students for the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) exams. Topics include clinical data collection, chairside procedures, oral anatomy, dental materials (preparation, manipulation, application), lab materials and procedures, patient education, infection control, occupational safety, legal issues, emergency management, and office procedures. The course also presents the theory and practice of legal Expanded Functions for dental assistants, including discussion, demonstration, and practical application of skills such as intra- and extra-oral exams, coronal polishing, topical fluoride application, amalgam and composite polishing, provisional coverage, suture removal, cement removal, retraction cord placement, pit and fissure sealant placement, and tooth whitening.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- CLO#1: Describe chairside assisting techniques, including the proper use of instruments, materials, and procedures.
- CLO#2: Describe crown and bridge set-up procedures and fixed and removable prostheses. (ILO: Critical Thinking)
- CLO#3: Conduct a dietary assessment for the patient and provide nutritional guidance.
- CLO#4: Describe a patient’s home care routine and provide oral hygiene instructions.
- CLO#5: Explain the different isolation techniques.

Length of Course: A required state minimum of (40) and a standard RCC delivery of (44) lecture hours per term, not to exceed (48) hours per term.
