APR 129A - Aviation General I

Prerequisite(s):  

Registered Apprentices with Southern Oregon Aviation JATC.

Course Description: This course covers key concepts and practical skills essential for apprentices in the Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic Apprenticeship program. Topics include aircraft ground handling techniques, understanding FARS and technical publications, and applying mathematics to aviation maintenance tasks. Apprentices will also learn to read blueprints and drawings, understand basic physics and aerodynamics, and identify fasteners and hardware used in aircraft systems. This course provides the foundational knowledge necessary for safe, precise, and efficient aircraft maintenance.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1: List and define basic physical science applications associated with aviation.
  • CLO#2: Explain the basic principles of flight, including aerodynamic forces, gyroscopic precession, and control surfaces on fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.
  • CLO#3: Define aircraft functions, operations and components using industry terminology. (ILO: Information Literacy)
  • CLO#4: Apply Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and related Codified Federal Regulations to ensure compliance when performing required duties.
  • CLO#5: Identify the basic symbols used in aircraft drawings, differentiating types of drawings, views and projections used in aircraft maintenance.
  • CLO#6: Demonstrate proper procedures for towing or taxiing aircraft, fueling (over wing or pressure), and conducting fuel system contamination testing.
