APR 229B - Aviation Powerplant I 6 Credit(s)
Prerequisite(s):
Registered Apprentice with Southern Oregon Aviation JATC.
Course Description: This course covers essential knowledge of aircraft powerplant systems, including propellers, engine removal and replacement, fire protection systems, engine maintenance and operation, light-sport aircraft engines, and a comprehensive review of powerplant concepts. Emphasis is placed on FAA-approved procedures and standards.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- CLO#1: Describe the function of governors, pitch control mechanisms, and anti-icing systems in various propeller systems. (ILO: Communication)
- CLO#2: List the steps involved in the engine removal and installation process. (ILO: Critical Thinking)
- CLO#3: Assess the condition and airworthiness of fire protection systems using FAA standards and manufacturer specifications.
- CLO#4: Define key engine components and systems (e.g., lubrication, fuel, ignition, cooling).
- CLO#5: Compare the performance characteristics and maintenance requirements of LSA engines versus certified aircraft engines.
