Prerequisite(s):
Registered Apprentice with the Southern Oregon Aviation Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC).
Course Description: This course covers the fundamentals of aircraft engine systems, including fuel and metering, induction and exhaust, ignition and electrical, starting systems, and lubrication and cooling. Students will gain essential knowledge of engine operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques to ensure optimal performance and compliance with regulatory standards.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- CLO#1: Identify major components and classifications of aircraft engines (reciprocating and turbine). (ILO: Critical Thinking)
- CLO#2: Describe the function of different types of fuel metering systems (e.g., carburetor, fuel injection). (ILO: Communication)
- CLO#3: Demonstrate how to perform visual inspections to check for signs of wear, damage, or blockages in induction and exhaust systems.
- CLO#4: Identify key components of engine ignition and electrical systems, such as magnetos, spark plugs, alternators, and voltage regulators.
- CLO#5: Evaluate the condition of batteries and electrical connections in the starting system, determining if replacement or further maintenance is needed.
- CLO#6: Explain how the lubrication system circulates oil to reduce friction and wear in engine components.

Length of Course: A required state minimum of (40) and a standard RCC delivery of (44) lecture hours per term, not to exceed (48) hours per term.
