AH 123 - Healthcare Legal and Ethical Issues

Course Description: Exposes students to a variety of legal and ethical dilemmas, helping students become more prudent and confident medical assistants or medical administrative assistants. Classroom content includes the legal system, the legal rights that define relationships between individuals, quality assurance, office protocols and patient records, and legal issues that affect employment.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  • CLO#1: Describe the differences between laws and ethics in healthcare.
  • CLO#2: Explain standard of care and its role in various scenarios.
  • CLO#3: Define workplace sexual harassment and strategies for prevention and response. (ILO: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Global Consciousness)
  • CLO#4: Describe culturally competent healthcare and practices of medical staff. (ILO: Critical Thinking)
  • CLO#5: Explain ethical principles in healthcare and how they influence decision-making.
  • CLO#6: Analyze the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and its impact on medical office practices.
