DH 231 - Community Dental Health II

Prerequisite(s):  

Successful completion of the first five terms of the Dental Hygiene program.

Course Description: Continues the Community Dental Health I course in which students apply public health/health education principles through implementing individual community oral health education projects, and through participating in-service learning activities outside the classroom setting. Emphasis is placed on students interacting with a variety of patients, including the physically and mentally challenged, indigent populations, and geriatric groups. Students gain experience in health education, as well as additional experience in providing clinical preventive services out in the community.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1 Recall and test the plan created in DH231, Community Dental Health class.
  • CLO#2 Construct an assessment plan for patients in the community project.
  • CLO#3 Identify the individual needs of the underserved patient in a specific community project. (ILO: Critical Thinking)
  • CLO#4 Discuss and demonstrate dental hygiene care for a fearful patient.
  • CLO#5 Demonstrate and analyze the ways to provide humane and compassionate care to all patients.
