DH 210 - Oral Pathology

Prerequisite(s):  

Successful completion of the first two terms of the Dental Hygiene program.

Course Description: Introduces the principles of human disease including pathogenesis, clinical appearance, treatment, and microscopic features. In addition, basic principles of general pathology and the dental hygienist’s role in the recognition of oral disease are included.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1 Appraise the eight categories that contribute to a definitive or final diagnosis.
  • CLO#2 Distinguish the variants of normal in the oral cavity.
  • CLO#3 List and illustrate the different causes of injury to the orofacial tissue.
  • CLO#4 Discuss the two different types of immunities.
  • CLO#5 Categorize and discuss the various autoimmune diseases with oral manifestations. (ILO: Communication)
  • CLO#6 Differentiate between bacterial, fungal, and viral infections.
  • CLO#7 Discuss and appraise gene and chromosomal abnormalities.
