DA 123 - Legal - Ethical Issues in Dentistry

Prerequisite(s):  

Successful admittance to the Dental program.

Course Description: Exposes the student to variety of legal and ethical dilemmas in dentistry, helping students become more prudent and confident professionals. Students will become familiar with the legal system, the legal rights that define relationships between individuals, quality assurance, office protocols and patient records, and legal issues that affect employment. Course is dual numbered as DH 123 

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1: Describe the differences between laws and ethics and the major components of ethical theories.
  • CLO#2: Describe the major components of the American legal system, with emphasis on how dentistry is regulated on the State and Federal level.
  • CLO#3: Define malpractice in the dental profession and describe the possible consequences of professional negligence. (ILO: Information Literacy)
  • CLO#4: Define contract, describe the types of contracts and who may enter into a contract, and the possible consequences of breaching a contract.
  • CLO#5: Define and describe the different types of consent for dental treatment and the legal and ethical boundaries regarding who may give consent.
