PH 213 - General Physics - Calculus III

5 Credit(s)

Prerequisite(s):

MTH 252Z PH 212

Course Description: This is the third term of a three-term calculus-based physics course. Waves, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics are covered. This includes but is not limited to wave interference, diffraction, photoelectric effect, wave-particle duality, Schrödinger wave equation, spectra, heat capacity, kinetic molecular theory, multiplicity, entropy, ideal gas law, cyclic processes, laws of thermodynamics and heat engines. This course number includes both lecture and lab.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1: Use vectors, algebra, calculus, dimensional analysis, and logical reasoning to solve general physics problems. (ILO: Quantitative Literacy and Reasoning)
  • CLO#2: Make sensible assumptions and simplifications to solve physics problems with incomplete information, using calculus where appropriate.
  • CLO#3: Use Maxwell’s equations to analyze magnetic flux, electromagnetic induction, and electromagnetic radiation, using calculus where appropriate.
  • CLO#4: Apply wave physics principles (interference, diffraction, resonance, wave-particle duality) to physical systems, using calculus where appropriate.
  • CLO#5: Apply fundamental quantum mechanics concepts (probability, spin, wave function, spectroscopy, Schrödinger equation, nuclear physics) to problem-solving, using calculus where appropriate.
  • CLO#6: Use thermodynamic principles (multiplicity, entropy, Boltzmann factors, gases, distributions, cyclic processes, engines) to analyze energy and heat transfer, using calculus where appropriate.
  • CLO#7: Interpret laboratory data to draw conclusions about general physics experiments including calculus-based error propagation.
