BI 234 - Microbiology

4 Credit(s)

Prerequisite(s):

BI 112  or BI 221Z  (formerly offered as BI 211 / BI 211L)

Recommended Prerequisite(s):

CHEM 104Z  / CHEM 124Z  (formerly offered as CHEM 104 / CHEM 104L)

Course Description: Studies microorganisms, focusing primarily on bacteria and viruses. Covers the structure, function, metabolism, genetics and classification of bacteria and archaea. Also includes topics of microbial control, viral replication, epidemiology and vaccinations.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • CLO#1: Explain the historical foundations and major discoveries of microbiology and assess their influence on modern science, medicine, and biotechnology.
  • CLO#2: Analyze the structure and function of prokaryotic cells, relating cellular components to physiological processes, metabolism, and ecological roles.
  • CLO#3: Evaluate factors that influence microbial growth, including environmental and nutritional conditions, and interpret experimental data to determine growth patterns.
  • CLO#4: Explain principles of microbial genetics and gene expression, and apply these concepts to laboratory investigations of mutation, gene transfer, and regulation.
  • CLO#5: Differentiate viruses, viroids, and prions from cellular organisms and explain their replication and impact on host systems.
  • CLO#6: Interpret patterns of disease transmission and epidemiological data to explain mechanisms of infection, prevention, and control. (ILO: Critical Thinking)
  • CLO#7: Describe the basic mechanisms of immune response and relate them to clinical applications such as vaccination and antimicrobial therapy.
  • CLO#8: Demonstrate correct laboratory techniques-including aseptic transfer, culture maintenance, microscopy, and biochemical testing-to observe, isolate, and identify microorganisms.
